These clutches allow for little to no tuning, since they have no adjustable parts like the mechanical clutches found in Puch, Minarelli and other moped engines.

These rubber clutches rely on a thin layer of oil between the clutch and the clutch bell, which is pushed away as the rotational energy of the engine increases and expands the rubber clutch slightly outward into the bell. Because of this, maintaining a proper oil level in the transmission is imperative. Too little oiland the clutch grabs all the time, preventing the bike from idling when off of its stand.

Since Garelli clutch covers tend to leak slowly, you may end up with a condition where the bike will idle off the stand, but will bog as soon as the throttle is applied, because the clutch grabs too soon. This condition renders tuning the bike nearly impossible. Too Much Oil and you end up with excessive slipping of the clutch, which causes high friction and heat. In some cases, this friction will melt the outside of the clutch and smear rubber onto the clutch bell.

This condition will not allow the clutch to engage smoothly, and you may notice the bike jerking when getting up to speed. Note: This smearing of clutch material can also occur with a proper oil level when an engine has been modified to have high amounts of torque, since the rubber clutch is not designed to be a high-performance part. Garelli engines require Non-Detergent ND oil. Oil with detergent additives will impregnate the rubber, causing it to expand and make permanent contact with the clutch bell.

It will also destroy the rubber bushings used in one-speed engines. The Horizontal or NOI engine is a 49cc piston-port engine with an internal pedal mechanism.

It came in both one and less-common two-speed options, with 17, 20, 25, and 30mph top speed ratings. These different speeds were accomplished through a variety of means, including cylinder port area, head design, intake variance, various carbs and jettingsgearingspark plug type, exhaust header diameter and shape, muffler restriction, and piston crown shape.

The starter clutch mechanism in these engines relies on four rubber bushings, which compress, allowing the side of the rubber clutch to press into the back of the clutch bell, turning the crankshaft. These bushings can fail and disintegrate, rendering it impossible to start the bike. They can be replaced with rubber fuel line.
